Yahoo will power the search facility on the TIM mobile portal, which has more than 41 million mobile subscribers in Brazil.
Such a strategy follows in the footsteps of a Yahoo/ Nokia partnership to improve mapping, mail and chat services and also the purchase of Koprol, an Indonesian location 'check-in' technology startup and echoes a recent focus on emerging mobile markets in general. Melissa Beltrao, Director, Yahoo! Mobile Brazil said, "this partnership builds on our existing relationships with Telefónica's Vivo and América Móvil's Claro in Brazil, and more than 100 other OEM and carrier partners globally. Partnerships are key to our strategy as they help us build and extend the reach of our mobile services to new and existing audiences around the world."
Brazil is Latin America's biggest economy and offers a huge market for mobile Internet growth, as 185 million people out of 193 million have mobile phones. At the end of 2009 TIM's 3G coverage is reported to reach 30% of the urban population in Brazil and the Brazilian smartphone market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 43% in the period 2010-14, according to Pyramid Research senior analyst, Omar Salvador.
