Newsknife Ranks Top News Sites and Journalists of Google News for 2010

Newsknife has just announced its ninth annual list of the top news sites based on their appearances in Google News. And for the first time, Newsknife has announced its first list of the top journalists based on appearances of their stories in Google News.

The Top News Sites of 2010 is compiled by Newsknife, which is is a project of Industry Standard Computing Ltd (ISC). ISC is a software development organization based in New Zealand. Newsknife analyzes more than 161,000 listings by 5,859 news sites in Google News during 2010.

The Newsknife Top News Sites of 2010 are:

    1. New York Times

    1. Los Angeles Times

    1. Wall Street Journal

    1. Reuters

    1. Washington Post

    1. The Associated Press

    1. USA Today

    1. CNN

    1. ABC News

    1. BBC News, U.K.

It’s worth noting that The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, CNN, ABC News, and BBC News are all optimizing their stories for Google News and using social media to build links. If you want to know exactly what they’re doing, check out the video interviews below.

So, what does this mean to marketers? If your PR people pitch a story (or leak some information) to one of these news sites then the story has a better chance to appear on the home page and first subpage of Google News, which gets 9.4 million unique visitors a month in the U.S., according to Compete.

Now, your PR people are going to tell you that they sorta, kinda knew that already. But I bet they wouldn’t have listed the Los Angeles Times ahead of The Wall Street Journal. And I’ll bet they didn’t have BBC News, U.K. on their list of top news sites in the U.S.

Get it? Got it? Good.

And if you want to tell your PR people something that they don’t know, then show them Newsknife’s list of top journalists.

The Top Journalists of 2010 is compiled by Newsknife from its analysis of more than 332,000 listings attributed to 36,481 journalists at the 22 English language Google News sites during 2010. Newsknife ranked these journalists top for the listings it found attributed to them in the “Top Stories” sections of the individual regional Google News sites.

Newsknife Top Journalists of 2010 are:

    1. Australia James Massola

    1. Botswana Bame Piet

    1. Canada (English) Bryn Weese

    1. Ethiopia Barry Malone

    1. Ghana Kobina Welsing

    1. India Smita Gupta

    1. Ireland Harry McGee

    1. Israel Barak Ravid

    1. Kenya Anthony Kagiri

    1. Malaysia Charles Ramendran

That’s right. All the top journalists are from outside the U.S. The top U.S. journalist, Frank James, is ranked #21.

What does this mean to marketers? There are a couple of possible explanations.

Newsknife believes its ratings give a guide to the ability and specialized expertise of individual journalists. So, maybe journalists outside the U.S. have more ability and specialized expertise in categories of Google News, like World News or Health News.

Or, another explanation could be that news sites outside of the U.S. may be more likely to name a journalist who wrote a story because they are proud of this person’s ability. If that person is named frequently in listings that rank highly at Google News this suggestion of ability is reinforced.

Either way, your PR people should pay closer attention to the journalists that rank highly in a specific section of Google News like “Business” or “Sci/Tech” because Newsknife suggests that they are a particularly good person to follow for news in that category.

Now, there’s a memo worth writing to your PR people at the end of year — to ensure that 2011 gets off to a stronger start.
