Want to Work at Google? Company Plans to Hire More than 6,000
Fresh off record earnings of $8.44 billion and the arrival of Larry Page as CEO, Alan Eustace, Google’s SVP Engineering and Research, has declared that 2011 will be the biggest hiring year in the company’s history.
Google added 4,565 workers (mainly in engineering and sales) globally in 2010, a year that is only topped by 2007, when Google added about 6,100 workers. At least 2,000 of the hires will be based around Google’s main headquarters in Mountain View, at San Bruno-based YouTube and in its San Francisco offices, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
Separately today, CEO Eric Schmidt said at the DLD conference that the company is planning to hire 1,000 in Europe.
In a blog post, Eustace wrote that the company is looking to hire top talent across the board:
“We’ll hire as many smart, creative people as we can to tackle some of the toughest challenges in computer science: like building a web-based operating system from scratch, instantly searching an index of more than 100 million gigabytes and even developing cars that drive themselves. There’s something at Google for everyone–from geo, to enterprise, to video–with most of the work done in small teams, effectively working as start-ups. (The average number of software engineers on a project at Google is 3.5.) That’s why the vast majority of our people stay with us, building their careers and taking on new challenges within the company.”
