January 26th is Australia Day and a day of celebration for Australians everywhere. It is a day to celebrate being Australian. This year's Google Doodle of beach items seems to categorize the country as a beach resort more than a serious industrial country.
While it is nice that Google provides these Doodles specific to country events - you can only see the Doodle at Google.com.au - but it sometimes appears that the art is very general, especially outside of the United States.
While the date falls during the Australian summer, like the 4th of July in the US, the event is a patriotic one, more about the country than its beautiful beaches.
"On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future," the event's official site explains.
True much of the celebration is done at the beach, but not all. Surely Google could have used landmarks like the Opera House or Uluru (the big red rock) or any of its numerous unique animals. Google has offices in Australia and at least one single digit employee that I know of who is Australian.
Being Australian is more than playing at the beach. The country is home to many search professionals and online entrepreneurs who spend more time behind a computer than at the beach.
