by ,  Comments

Google has added a Doodle honoring one of the most popular Czech actors and playwrights Jan Werich. Beyond his acting in many classic Czech movies, Werich was loved by his country for staying when so many others left.

Werich created theaters, wrote plays and movie scripts both between the two world wars and except for a few years during World War 2 remained in his country despite its political turmoil. The only other time he left was when the Soviets invaded and occupied the country, but his love of his country brought him back - even though some of his writing met with obstacles.

He was even cast as the penultimate James Bond villain Blofeld, but ill health lost him the role to Donald Pleasence. HIs absurdist plays were very popular and his early theater work got him recognized, but it was his movies that gave him cult status.
