Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was born on 15 February 1874 and died on 5 January 1922. He was famous for his exploration of the Antartic and at one time had gone the furthest into the South Pole region. The Google Doodle today honors those efforts which ultimately took his life.

Shackleton was involved with his first expedition to the South Pole in 1901 - a time when there were no modern mechanical aids to make the journey. There were no insulated clothing as exists now. These trips were hard, the North and South Poles still challenge man with all our modern technology. But these men faced the challenge as one that no person had done before - they were like the early space missions.

At one poiint in his life, Shakleton's team had gone the deepest in to this frozen world and was fighting to reach the South Pole before anyone else. His attempt was not successful and Norwegian explorer Raold Amundsen was the first to claim the Pole.

The communities that now live near the South Pole and do research that benefits mankind all owe a debt of gratitude to Shackleton and the others explorers of the past.
