Google Senior VP Rosenberg Stepping Down After '9 Short Years'

Unable to make a long-term, multi-year commitment to Google, Jonathan Rosenberg, Senior Vice President, Product Management, will leave Google within the coming months. The news came out last night at the end of Larry Page’s first day back as CEO.

Rosenberg, who recently earned a raise, $1.7 million bonus, and $5 million in equity, had planned to leave Google in 2013, when his daughter heads to college. Instead, yesterday he sent out an internal memo about his departure, titled “9 Short Years.”

Rosenberg was hired in 2002, having previously worked at Apple and Excite@Home. He was credited as being a mentor to many upcoming Google executives, including Susan Wojcicki and Marissa Mayer.

Rosenberg will take time off in the summer before returning as a consultant — and also plans to co-write a book with Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt about “the values, rules and creation of Google’s management culture.”

“We tried to hire Jonathan multiple times because he was the only person we could imagine doing the job,” Page said in a statement. “It’s lucky we were so persistent because he’s built an amazing team — hiring great people, who’ve created amazing products that have benefited over a billion users around the world.”
