Global Search Market Share, July 2009 vs. July 2008

by ,  Comments

Not only does Google continue to dominate the global search market, it's also growing faster than any of its competitors, according to data from comScore.

The audience measurement firm estimates that Google sites notched up a total of 76.7 billion searches during the month of July 2009, an increase of 58 percent over July 2008. Google's search product therefore continues to govern the global search landscape, accounting for over 67 percent of all queries worldwide, comScore suggests.

In comparison, Yahoo and Microsoft -- which agreed to a ten-year search partnership in July -- attracted a joint total of 12.2 billion queries through their search services, which represents just 10.7 percent of queries globally. Microsoft's product did, however, experience substantial year-on-year growth of 41 percent.

Chinese engine Baidu came in behind Yahoo with just under 8 billion searches, or 7 percent global share, while Russian product Yandex grew faster than any other engine in the top ten, experiencing 94 percent year-on-year growth.

In total, comScore reckons that over 113 billion searches were conducted globally during July, up by 41 percent compared to a year ago. Europe accounted for the highest share of searches at 32.1 percent, followed by Asia Pacific with 30.8 percent, and North America with 22.1 percent. Latin America and the Middle East and Africa round out the list with 9.3 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively.

Latin America exhibited the most searches per person with an average of 13 search usage days in July and 130 searches per searcher. Europe had the second highest overall search volume per person with 117 searches per searcher, followed by North America with 112.
