Local search site Citysearch has launched an application for the iPhone and iPod touch.
Citysearch is touting the following features for the app:
Unfortunately, the implementation leaves a lot to be desired. The top listing for Food using My Location is a catering business based out of a nearby home. Another listing is an independent coffee shop that no longer exists.
Shopping was worse. The top results didn't include anything from nearby Brier Creek, a very popular shopping area in North Raleigh where I live.
The app looks fantastic. I like the dark background and light colors that don't make my eyes strain. But hopefully Citysearch will improve its results to make the app more useful. Amidst all the secret talks of mergers and deals between the top search players, AOL and IAC have agreed to a distribution deal. AOL will publish local content and pay-per-click ads from Citysearch across the AOL network. Content will include editorial reviews, user reviews, merchant videos, and photos, to be distributed on sites like AOL CityGuide, AOL Local Search and MapQuest.
Citysearch gains targeted inventory and reach for their advertisers, and AOL gets Citysearch content and a share in the ad revenue.
“AOL has the largest local online network and this partnership gives us the ability to enhance our local experience, expand our reach by incorporating Citysearch's rich local content in our numerous local sites and improve monetization of our local properties through Citysearch's local advertising network,” John Kannapell, SVP of AOL Search, said in a statement. “The combination of the enhanced content and reach into new markets will also increase the premium local advertising inventory available to advertisers through Platform-A.”

More pay-per-call services to report on.
Citysearch has launched a pay-per-call service called PFP-Calls.
The new product allows local merchants to track business leads through the number of phone calls they receive. Merchants are charged a fee per call and when an advertising cap is reached the toll free number (which appears throughout the site) is removed and replaced with the local, non-metered number (which only appears on the merchant's information page). A bit more info in the news release.
FindWhat launched a pay-per-call service in September. Last month, Forbes published a story about Inegio, a company providing the pay-per-call technology to FindWhat.
I wonder if pay-per-call fraud will be a topic in 2005. (-:

Topix.net (a news resource I utilize several times each day) and Citysearch are announcing a deal today that will bring news headlines from Topix.net to 40 local Citysearch guides AND feature advertising from the Citysearch ad network (32,500 advertisers) on Topix.net's (32,000+) local news pages.
The partnership should be integrated into their respective sites by the end of 2004.
Topix.net appears to be on a roll. In the past few months they've announced deals with: + Ask Jeeves + Yahoo Local news RSS feeds for My Yahoo + Info.com

CitySearch is entering the toolbar "war" today with a beta release of their entry (IE Only).
In addition to being able to search CitySearch data the toolbar also provides direct access to the Google and Yahoo local search services.
Btw, CitySearch content also powers the new Ask Jeeves Local which was officially launched today.

In early August Jeeves announced a deal that would bring CitySearch local and business data to their database. Content would likely appear as "Smart Results". The announcement said that the data would begin appearing in about a month.
In the past couple of days I've started to notice some CitySearch local data appering on Jeeves.
Some examples of what the company is calling AJ Local: + Tampa restaurants Three listings appear, click "More Matching Listings" to find a full list, maps, and ratings.
+ Hair Salons Portland This results also provides a link to a "related category" and an option to change the city. In this case AJ assumes Portland, OR but makes switching to Portland, ME easy.
You can also go directly to the AJ Local interface.
Update: I'm also starting to notice PDF content in Teoma. Hooray!
