Gary Price points to a review of Windows Live Academic by "legendary reviewer" Dr. Peter Jacso. The bottom line of the review is that Dr. Peter Jacso was not impressed. He said, "Windows Live Academic is a deeply disappointing product, even for a beta release." Dr. Jacso add that the "sloppiness and incompetence of the programming work is appalling and undermines the reputation of good Microsoft products." This is a huge, "ouch" for Microsoft.

Microsoft has launched Windows Live Academic Search, a service designed to help students, researchers and other academics more easily find scholarly information. Microsoft has taken a completely different approach than what we've seen with Google Scholar, in content, user interface and in plans for monetization of the service. I've got more on the new service in today's SearchDay article, Microsoft Launches Windows Live Academic Search.
Postscript by Barry: Just wanted to add that Gary Price has a nice librarian view of this at ResourceShelf that is worth a quick review. And Microsoft's official release can be found here.

Gary Price believes Microsoft may be releasing the rumored Windows Live Academic Search tomorrow. Dean Giustini has seen it in action and posted his views here. Dean explains the pros and cons, as compared to Google Scholar, a competing academic search service. So will we see the launch of http://academic.live.com/ soon? Many think so.
