Google AdWords Launches Ad Sitelinks

Google is introducing sitelinks to AdWords. If you're not familiar, sitelinks are links to pages deeper on a website. We've seen them in organic results for quite awhile.

Ad Sitelinks are only being launched to advertisers that meet a high-quality threshold. If your account qualifies, go to your Campaign Settings Tab, then to the "Ad extensions" section. Look for "Show additional links to my site."

Here's a sample ad provided by the Inside AdWords blog (click to enlarge):

SEW Experts: Need Sitelinks? Show Google Your Site Is Useful

Not all sites are blessed with Google sitelinks. Google only shows them when its algorithms determine they'd be useful. In today's SEM Crossfire column, "Need Sitelinks? Show Google Your Site Is Useful," Chris Boggs and Frank Watson share some ideas on making your site useful, and addressing your site's structure to make sure Google can see that.

SEW Experts: Google Sitelinks - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The addition of sitelinks to the top listing in certain Google searches can be a boon to site owner. Unfortunately, as with all tests of new technology, this feature has some pretty serious bugs. In today's SEM Crossfire column, "Google Sitelinks - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," Chris Boggs shows you how to fix the ones that are a fault of your site structure, and deal with the ones that are Google's fault.

Google Showing Update Time By Minute

I was doing a site:domain search last night and noticed Google is now giving the time of the last update or visit - by the minute. I will call over to Google and get a clarification but it is interesting either way.

One shows when the site may have been last spidered or updated, or when someone last visited the page.

I did a screen capture but they are still there. Though it seems to be for the more visited sites, I am still playing to get an idea of what is causing this.

Update: Barry Schwartz showed me this.... guess I was six months late on this one.

Google Revamps Sitelinks

Google has apparently made some changes to the way it assigns and shows Sitelinks, the list of pages included under the search results for certain sites that have a clear directory structure. As Barry Schwartz notes in posts at Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable, several sites that did not previously have Sitelinks now do, as of this weekend.

The Sitelinks were officially named in September 2006, but have been around for at least July 2005. Google explains how they work in the Webmaster Help Center.

Google Sitelinks: New Name For Those Links Under The Top Listings

Last year, people started to notice that Google began showing "subtopic" or "subcategory" links below their listing, if they were the first in a Google search. Now, Google's finally confirmed the change as a permanent feature and given it a name: sitelinks.

Here's an example of sitelinks in action, which I tapped into doing a search for HP:

Notice how under the first result, there are a number of sub-listings, such as:

Software & Driver Downloads - http://welcome.hp.com/.../us/en/support.html Contact HP - http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact_us.html Jobs - http://www.jobs.hp.com/ Small & Medium Business - http://www.hp.com/sbso/

Those are sitelinks, and now named via the Information about Sitelinks post at the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog. Do the search, and you'll see only the first result gets them (you'll also notice that Google is failing to remove the second www.hp.com listing as it should -- only one major listing per web site per results page should be showing. I think there's a bug, at the moment).

How do you get sitelinks? You have to be in the first position for a search. Aside from that, whether they'll still then show up and exactly which ones show, if so, aren't explained. Here's the new help page on that.
