The World of Google

Puzzled by PageRank? Dying to be invited to the "Google Dance?" A new directory features links to hundreds of resources covering all aspects of the world according to Google.

I suppose it was inevitable, given Google's widespread popularity. Google World is a categorized directory that makes it easy to find just about any type of information about the search engine.

The directory is published by Indicateur.com, a French guide to search engines and searching. Many of the links point to helpful pages on Google.com itself that aren't necessarily easily found unless you do some digging on the site.

Other links come from sources outside Google. The good news is that most of the selections included in the Google World directory appear to be relatively high quality.

For example, there are a number of links to academic papers about Google's PageRank algorithm, as well as to patents issued and applied for. And, if you're into hacking Google, there's a good set of links to information about and source code that uses the Google API.

Though the resources appear carefully selected, as always, you should think critically about anything published about a search engine that doesn't come from the source.

The French language Indicateur.com website is also worth a look, even if you can't read the language. The site sports lots of useful information about web search, and you can always use Google's translation tool to get rough translations of interesting items.

Be sure to check out the "Guides" listed on the right side of the home page. These are directories of search engines, organized by theme and geographic regions.

Even if your French is rusty, there are enough contextual clues to allow you to access many of the hundreds of specialized search engines listed in these collections. Spending some time with these Guides is an excellent way to extend your search toolkit beyond everyday search engines like, well... Google.

Search Headlines

NOTE: Article links often change. In case of a bad link, use the publication's search facility, which most have, and search for the headline.
